Medication Dosage
The dosage charts below are for Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, Cetirizine, and Diphenhydramine. All are commonly used medications that can be purchased over the counter without a prescription.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Dosing Chart
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Notes:
Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.
Acetaminophen can be taken every 4 hours (but not more than 5 times per 24 hour period)
Do not use under 3 months of age without consulting your physician as we would often like see your infant if they have a fever. Exception: If your child develops fever that starts within 24 hours after the 2 month vaccines and lasts no longer than 24 hours in duration.
Do not use with any other product containing acetaminophen.
Acetaminophen can be taken at the same time as Ibuprofen.
Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) Dosing Chart
Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) Notes:
Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing.
Ibuprofen can be taken every 6 hours.
Do not use under 6 months of age.
Ibuprofen can be taken at the same time as Acetaminophen.
Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Dosing Chart
Cetirizine (Zyrtec) Notes:
Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.
Treatment of nasal or eye allergies, hives, itching, and other allergic symptoms. This will not work for the common cold.
Give once at time of allergic reaction and then daily as need after consultation with physician.
Do not use below 2 years of age, as it is not FDA approved.
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Dosing Chart
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) Notes:
Always read and follow the label on all products, and default to the weight for the most accurate dosing, if at all possible.
Generally, Cetirizine is a better antihistamine to use for almost all situations as it is not sedating and lasts longer than Diphenhydramine.
Diphenhydramine can be given every 6 hours.
Do not give to infants <1 year of age, and use with caution in children < 2 years of age because it is sedating.
Do not use for the common cold as this will not work.
